About the Alliance

The Alliance for Women is a center for research and data collection and program and policy development to improve the status of women in South Carolina. We envision a comprehensive alliance of South Carolinians working together to improve the standard of living for all South Carolina citizens by supporting enhanced economic autonomy, health and well-being, and political participation for the state's women.
The Alliance for Women has established three goals for 2005-2008:
  1. Determine the root causes of inequities for women through on-going research.
  2. Identify best practices that have been effective in improving the status of women.
  3. Develop measurable programs that will be effective in:
    • increasing wages and employability of women
    • increasing women's business ownership
    • expanding the occupations available to women through improved education
    • increasing the number of women in elected or appointed public office
    • increasing the health and well-being of South Carolina women
    • decreasing teen pregnancy
    • decreasing domestic violence
The 2007 Legislative Agenda for Women includes legislative initiatives from the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assualt, Voices for South Carolina Children, Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, the South Caroina Chamber of Commerce and recommendations from the Alliance Think Tank on Women Entrepreneurs.

Organized to facilitate changes in policies, programs, and resource allocations, The Alliance for Women has begun to develop alliances across many different groups.  Meet some of our partners/allies in our Partner pages.

In addition to partnering with established organizations working to improve the status of women in South Carolina, The Alliance for Women is establishing chapters of the Alliance throughout the state. If you are interested in beginning a chapter of The Alliance for Women in your area, email lsalane@colacoll.edu for chapter guidelines.
